Brittany Ferries has become the first member of the Green PEA Scheme to be awarded a P5 Level certification, the highest level that can be awarded under the innovative green energy scheme established in Poole.

Brittany Ferries joined Green PEA in 2014. Since then it has undertaken many green initiatives aimed at reducing its CO2 emissions and removing cost out of the business. Some of the actions taken include replacing all the double glazing windows in their Poole offices, exchanging all fluorescent tubes for LED light panels, replacing old boilers with low energy alternatives and installing thermostatically-controlled radiators, installing roof-mounted solar panels and undertaking a thermal scan of the building to identify heat loss. In total Brittany Ferries has saved over £13,000 per annum and made a saving of 113 tonnes of CO2. The calculated return on its investment is under 7 years.

The Green Positive Environmental Action scheme, or Green PEA for short, is a business certification scheme, backed by the Borough of Poole and the Poole Chamber of Commerce. It provides companies with a simple review of their energy costs, and then offers recommendations to help the business save money on their energy usage. Joining the scheme is completely free, with organisations just requiring a written commitment from their senior management team. Members then have the option of working through the different scheme levels at their convenience. The highest level – achieved by Brittany Ferries – is P5 whereby a Green PEA member has achieved a 20% saving in direct carbon emissions and introduced at least one brand new renewable technology.

Paul Cooling, Chair of the Green PEA CIC, is delighted Brittany Ferries has achieved this historic landmark:

The Green PEA scheme was established to encourage companies to make CO2 savings whilst helping them to reduce cost, and this is exactly what Brittany Ferries has achieved. We are thrilled they have been able to make this journey with the help of Green PEA and its partners, and we look forward to many of our other members following in their footsteps. It is more vital now than ever before that organisations seek to reduce their energy usage, and Green PEA welcomes any organisation, including businesses, hotels, schools and faith groups, that wishes to explore the options available to them.

Chris Kemp, Company Accountant for Brittany Ferries, was delighted to accept the award from Green PEA, and commented:

Any opportunity we are presented with to reduce our carbon emissions is very important to Brittany Ferries as we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. We have been encouraged and supported by Green PEA at every step of the way and we are proud of what we have achieved together. The company continues to explore ways of becoming more environmentally friendly, and in 2019 we will be launching our first ever LPG-powered cruise ferry, the Honfleur”.

Representatives from Brittany Ferries were presented with their P5 certificate at the recent Green PEA networking event, held at the Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth. Rosie Wallace, Managing Director of the Marsham Court, was in attendance to lend her support to the energy scheme, of which the Hotel is a proud member.
